When I was younger I used to wonder why Yoshi ran away every time Mario got hit. So one day I paused the game and realized that in order to get Yoshi to stick his tongue out, Mario had to punch him in the back of the head. He ran away to escape the abuse. I never looked at Mario the same after that.
