I saw it, and read the book, really liked both, it wasn't on par with 'Adventureland', which is one of the best coming of age stories, regardless of generation, but still a very well done movie. It's more heart then laughs, but it had a few moments, well acted, very relatable, it's funny my high school life was nothing like any of these movies, but still, what kid can't relate to some of the broader themes? Insecurity? Unrequited attraction? Sexual anxiety/first time?
The lead performances are all excellent, the childhood/Aunt story thread was tastefully done, and added a layer of depth, but at times, kind of distracted me from the story. It really worked for me, nostalgia, and appreciation for childhood are things that cross my mind as I near ten years after high school graduation. The bittersweet sentiment of childhood and the 'infinite' nature of adolescense is captured almost perfectly by the movie. When we were kids, we rarely thought about getting old...not old like 45, but like 25, 27, I know I didn't. I'd say makes you want to be a kid again, but it's more like you just remember when you were, and how hard it was then....but, it doesn't get any easier.
