Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
So I made this thread over in HL: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/china-taking-pleasure-in-pointing-out-american-hypocrisy.316213/

And reading it got me thinking what Black people (no matter the country or culture) can do to change the perception that non-blacks have of us.

Here's a bit of a Chinese perception:

But like many other Chinese, he has a facile preconceived set of notions about black people that stem from a historical lack of contact. There’s little or no effort here to distinguish between Africans, African-Americans, African-Europeans, Afro-Carribbeans, or recent African migrants to China. They all fall under a homogenous umbrella – hei ren, or “black person” – attended by a variety of sweeping stereotypes, including a proclivity for violence and crime.

Black people to finance, produce, and distribute our own media. Basically Nollywood and other African cinema is going to have to get bigger. That will beam out better images. Combine that with wealth and military might, things should then get better.

Non Black people are simply not interested in having a better perception of us, there are more than enough examples of Black people that shatter the stereotypes but they're largely ignored or people will look for faults they have in spite of their excellency and focus on that instead, Floyd Mayweather for example.

The issue (to me) is that we always "worry" about perception and don't change it. You want to change perception, we need to change our reality. I'm not a "Responsibility Politics" person at all and I understand the socioeconomic reasons behind poverty and drug use, but we need to start with this generation moving forward. We need to come together, stop using mindless drugs, build communities (even at the cost of relocating in certain pockets :yeshrug:) and we need to raise our children.

Truth of the matter is that as long as we look to be perceived by any outside observer, we are going to be perceived negatively. We need to make our own, build our own, and then we can focus on how we perceive each other.

Exactly. Not worried about what any non-blacks feel about us. My main focus is improving the lives of my people through my community organizing.
