Loved all those books as a middle school kid, and watched all the movies over the years, The Outsiders isn't really a good movie. It is far too glossy and overproduced, lacking the grit and realism that made the book so great. Rumble Fish, more abstract and hard to love, esp. as a 13 year old, but I remember That was Then this is Now hitting me the hardest. I carried that book around all day to finish it in 6th grade. The end just drained the life out of me.
