Spare me your daps
In lieu of the recent accusations against TLJ, I thought it was only fair to apply that same standard to the old movies.
Let's be honest, and I say this as a huge fan, the 'plot holes' and contrived BS has been there from the beginning.
ESB
- Re-establishes the empire as the dominant force in the galaxy with the alliance on the run, making the destruction of the death star completely insignificant.
- Asserts that Vader is in command of the entire Empire whereas previously he was just a hired gun.
- Transforms the unseen emperor character into a sith lord, as well as Vader's master... where previously he was assumed to be just another corrupt bureaucrat.
- Obi-Wan can actually appear in full ghost form now instead of just speaking to Luke in his head. It's like he never died. He's back to being a fully formed character, only now he glows.
ROTJ
- Leia is Luke's sister now. (WHAT!?!?!?!?) This has always been the most egregious plot twist in the entire series. Ridiculous.
- Another death star... how swell.
- Luke sensed there was good in Vader... even though last time they met he was ready to deep freeze him and bring him before the Emperor. Where did he get this idea? It's pure contrived nonsense. There was zero indication in ESB that Vader was going soft. He wanted Luke to join him out of his own greed, not out of love.
- The whole Vader redemption arc in general comes out of left field. What could possibly redeem Vader? Why even entertain that story arc? The guy was a mass murderer. In fact you could argue that the movie oversteps it's boundaries by giving him a such a heartfelt sendoff. Guy was an evil dikk.
- Luke is able to turn Vader... proving that Yoda and Obi Wan don't know dikk about dikk.
Overall I would say that ESB succeeds in spite of these things, but ROTJ is definitely where things started to get REALLY crazy. You could argue that was the beginning of the end for the franchise.
