So for example she just succesfully defended 2000 she had from winning wimbledon last yr. She didn't make a gain....whereas kerber didn't go far last year so gained a whole bunch of points making this final.

They claim this is the best system. I dunno. It rewards the underachiever who the following year plays up to snuff. Serena has to defend the Canadian open win, Cincinnati, and the U.S. Open semi. She is not playing Cincinnati because of the Olympics, so she will lose a bunch of points but if she manages to hold on, she has nothing to defend after the Open. She can stretch her lead out then. One problem is the system rewards quantity over quality. Serena, at her age, is not going to be playing a rack of tournaments, so Kerber and Muguruza can gain simply by playing much more. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. I do want her to catch or surpass Steffi's consecutive weeks at no. 1. That's doable.
