I can only speak for Canon. I know there are guys who use Nikon, Fuji, and Sony here who can speak on those brands, but you can get a good startup Canon for under $700. The camera is only the first part though. Eventually he'll start "needing" or wanting new lenses and that's where it gets expensive.

Are you a Canon expert breh? I am thinking of upgrading my canon sx50 to a SLR. But I am not sure which one I should get. I am not quite ready for the 70D though ( my budget and my frequency of taking photos can't justify that price tag) I do want to take nice photos of the night sky, good zoom (but I guess that is based on the lens). Basically take wallpaper quality photos ()What do you recommend?
