WWE announces 32-competitor Women’s Tournament coming to WWE Network this summer
For the first time in WWE history, 32 of the top female competitors from around the world will participate in a tournament this summer on WWE Network.
The long-rumored tournament was confirmed today as part of “WWE Reimagined,” a presentation held at a business partner summit in Orlando, Fla., during WrestleMania Week.
Competitors from 17 countries are expected to participate in the tournament, underscoring the breadth and international diversity of women’s wrestling.
Raw Women’s Champion Bayley, SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and undefeated NXT Women’s Champion Asuka – all of whom are slated for title defenses this weekend – were on hand to break the big news with Paul "Triple H" Levesque, Executive Vice President, Talent, Live Events & Creative, and Stephanie McMahon, Chief Brand Officer. The tournament marks a new milestone for WWE’s ongoing Women’s Evolution.
"Building on our Women's division, it gives us great pleasure to share in announcing what's next for WWE," said Bayley. "For the first time ever, this summer, WWE Network will feature a Women's Tournament."
“I speak on behalf of all of us, not just the champions standing before you today, but the entire Women's division. It's truly an honor to be part of another significant movement in WWE history,” Bliss said.
After speaking to the audience in Japanese, Asuka said in English, "I am proud to be part of the Women's Evolution, representing Japan and WWE."
Levesque also shared the historic announcement with the WWE Universe on social media.

WWE Is Planning An All-Women’s Tournament, And It Could Happen Early Next Year
Rumors of an all-women’s tournament in WWE have been quietly batted around for the last few months, but now it looks like it’s going to become a reality. Much like they scouted for the Cruiserweight Classic, WWE has been on the lookout for independent female talent to bring on board for a showcase tournament highlighting the best female athletes pro wrestling has to offer.
WrestlingInc shared the news that the tournament could take place as early as the first quarter of 2017. If they manage to pull this off, it could be one of the most exciting things WWE has done in a long time.
WWE changed up how they approach the use of outside talent, allowing wrestlers like Samoa Joe and James Storm to perform on television without being under an official contract. Once that precedent was set, it paved the way for the critically adored Cruiserweight Classic. Not only did that tournament introduce viewers to some of the biggest names in independent wrestling, but helped set the standard for what WWE hopes to accomplish with their new Cruiserweight division. By doing the same kind of thing, but with unsigned female talent, it will help further put the stamp on the direction the company is trying to take in equalizing their women’s divisions.

As previously reported, there was internal talk about WWE possibly having another tournament similar to the WWE Cruiserweight Classic that would focus on female talent.
Apparently the plan is to possibly hold the event sometime in either January of February of next year. The working title for the project is the World Women’s Classic, which is being put together by Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. Now that the CWC is over, the plans are being set in motion.
Some within the promotion are having their doubts on thetournament because there are already two other women divisions on the main roster, so they are working extra hard on ways to figure out how to make the WWC feel important.
HHH confirms WWE women's tournament, not a fan of intergender matchesThe Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting the planned women’s tournament in WWE will either tape in January or March.
It’s being said that some non-contracted talents have been told about a January start date, while others have been told March. Despite this, some women have been contacted and have been told they are going to be in the tournament, and they should leave certain dates to be available.
Details about the unconfirmed tournament are lacking right now, so it’s unclear if the tapings would take place over several months like the Cruiserweight Classic, or how it would be set up, but talents with oversea tour dates during the proposed tapings would have to get those rearranged to participate in the tapings.
