PITTSBURGH —
A Pitt basketball player is charged with assaulting a woman at an Oakland apartment last month, Pittsburgh police said in a criminal complaint.
The complaint shows that Dior Johnson, 18, is charged with aggravated and simple assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and strangulation in connection with the incident, which police said happened late on the night of Sept. 5 and on the morning of Sept. 6 at the apartment in the 3400 block of Forbes Avenue.
Pitt released the following statement Friday night: "University of Pittsburgh men's basketball student-athlete Dior Johnson has been indefinitely suspended from all team activities pending the resolution of legal charges filed against him. The Pitt Athletic Department, which became aware of the charges Friday afternoon, will decline further comment until the legal process has reached a resolution."
The alleged victim gave police a written statement by email, police said.
She reported that Johnson became angry with her for getting him and his phone wet, that he "slapped her across the face 'full force' causing her face to become 'very red and puffy,'" police said in the complaint. The complaint also said that Johnson had the woman's phone, that he left the apartment around midnight, then came back at 4 a.m. and gave her back the phone.
A verbal argument took place at 8:30 a.m., and it escalated with the woman wanting to leave the apartment but Johnson not letting her, according to the complaint. "The argument continued for an hour before Johnson got violent and repeatedly punched (the woman) in her arms, stomach, and head multiple times," the complaint said. The woman said she called 911, but that Johnson ran after her with scissors, took the phone, hung it up and threw it.
In the complaint, police wrote that the woman said Johnson "continued to hit her multiple times in the arms, head and stomach making her throw up twice. Johnson attempted to call off from practice (it should be noted that Johnson is a basketball player on the University of Pittsburgh basketball team) because he did not want to leave her alone for fear that she would leave the apartment and call 911"
The woman waited until Johnson left the apartment, then she also left, according to the complaint. A copy of her medical discharge report from the hospital that she provided to police by email showed that she was treated for bruises and a concussion, police said in the complaint.
"Photos show bruising on (the woman's) left and right arms, scratches on her neck, bruising on her left collarbone and left shoulder and chest, and broken finger nail," the complaint said.
