Confidence gone and he isn't on a team that has time for him to get back into form unfortunately.

People see this version of sterling and forget how good he was in his day.

Yep - agree with all of that. Unless my memory is playing tricks, I'm sure I can remember him having some really good games against Arsenal. His pace used to give our defence and midfield cover the absolute shyts!

I don't really want to have to watch Sterling play for Arsenal again, but I do feel a bit sorry for him. Lots of endeavour, but, in terms of output, it has been an absolute car crash. At times it has actually been difficult to watch, sadly.

Hes a member of a very specific club where the fall was so steep & fast, that people are moving the goalposts on his career

he used to be a monster.

Cam Newton is another club example

The confidence is gone because his legs and feet no longer are as sharp like they use to be. If he was a technician he wouldn't look as bad. I said it when he was still Citeh he was on the decline. Just didn't look as sharp as he had done in previous seasons. Combined that with starting young basically being a first team starter since he was 17 no major injuries.

The narrative seems to be that he was a speed merchant, and when his pace fell off he did not have good skills / technique to cover up for it. That may be true in part, but no matter who your father is, you don't play for the clubs that he played for; gained as many international caps; and have the stats and honours that he does if you have no technique.

I seem to remember his career starting when he was really young, too, and, much like Saka, he had the shyt kicked out of him by the opposition on a very regular basis. No wonder he looks so washed now.

Seems like we're both in the small group of Heem defenders. Wish he came to Arsenal instead of the dippers, but the legacy of Wrighty would have weighed heavy on young shoulders, I'd imagine.

Arsenal need to leave Merino as an impact sub. Unless Arteta goes full Moyes with Cahill and Fellaini aerial bombardment from the start. Have the more mobile players to run the legs off the defenders for the first 60-65mins and then bring on Merino.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that part of the attraction in signing him was his height. Think that the intention was to field a technically good, but also tall & robust, XI which were all 6'2 or taller.

Maybe I read that on Twitter from some know nothing bellend, actually. Seemed to be sensible & on-point when I read it, though.
