While Kante is the best DM in the world, when has he played in the middle of a 3 for more than 2 games? Leicester he was alongside Drinkwater, then with Chelsea he played next to one of Matic/Cesc/Baka. And then in the WC, he was alongside Pogba, where he screened when France attacked. In a 3, his game is more suited to being one of the side midfielders.

If Kante had Fernandinho level passing then yeah he should be playing at the base of the 3, but he doesn't.

France did play a couple of games in 433 in the WC (notably against Belgium if I recall right) with Kante as the DM alongside Pogba and Matuidi but Deschamps is far more conservative than Sarri. Sarri's system does revolve around Jorginho unfortunately and it makes sense that he tries to make this work. I'm thinking that if he wants to keep Jorginho as a 6, he should mimick Juve with Pirlo and play a 3 man defense behind him to have more protection against transition. No way having Jorginho as a 6 will hold in the EPL if he's not backed up more. I say, you can then put Kanté as a box to box without it being to detrimental for his game.

But Kante would offer more defensively that what Jorginho is doing at that position and probably keep the same level of offensive output. That's the argument of Kante being played out of position. If Jorginho was getting assists and delivering those deep regista passes like he should, then that's a different story.

He offers far more defensive cover than Jorginho does ATM. He's a better screen for the back 4

Pirlo was probably the worse defensive cover known to man (yeah yeah, we knew what he did playing forward). Gattuso and Vidal were his legs.

Only way Kante works as the base in a 3, is in a counter attacking set up, not a possession one.
