My guess is that they thought their back line could just bully these guys and physically win 50/50 balls over the top, but guys like Salah will take contact and keep going anyway. Firmino and Mane will win those balls and dribble through you. It was a nice idea, I guess, as part of a plan to try and force a loss of possession by blocking out the midfield and pressing the passers kicking the ball around in the back, but Liverpool's front lines are not afraid of physicality.
