Nowt, I believe is the old english word that "naught" derives from, but its more comparable to "nothing" as its not really used in a mathematical sense.

i looked up nowt in my etymological dictionary and it said "northern english"

so it's colloquial, naught is universal yet archaic, but they mean the same
