Vini Jr. signed an extension with RM until 2026. He gets a raise in salary to become one of their highest paid players and his release clause is now set at 1 billion Euros.

Someone educate me here. I get that the release clause is somewhat symbolic but a billion? Like it’s Real and Neymar was 225/250?

Clubs do it to protect themselves. Barça didn’t think anybody would trigger Neymar’s release clause and then PSG came knocking. By setting the release clause at such an astronomical number the odds go down of any club actually paying it.

Those types of high dollar release clauses are becoming more normal in La Liga. Recently Barça signed a couple of their young stars to deals with Billion Euro release clauses as well.

Lol I know what they are but a billion seems like overkill. Doesn’t seem like many clubs could even get to 250 and Real is one of them.

Might be over thinking it and it’s just purely symbolic of said player being untouchable

Like yer man up there said, no one ever thought anyone would trigger Neymar's either.

Obviously common sense tells us the football bubble isn't going to grow to the extent where a 1bn fee is possible during the extent of Vini's contract, but you never know.(well we do tbf, the football bubble is has plateaued.)
