The ref can’t give a pen and not give a red. Clearing it off the line is a clear goal scoring opportunity so by the letter of the law, he has to send off James if he’s giving a pen

I guess the rule is that if you award the penalty for handball in that situation, it is a red. I would argue that maybe he didn’t deny an “obvious goal scoring opportunity with his hand” - he tried to knee the ball, successfully knee the ball. Was it obvious the ball would go into the net after the knee? Maybe, need to see it again - ref should have looked a few more times

Regardless change the rule to allow discretion on the red, this isn’t Suarez/Ghana
