Report and photos by Pepe Rodriguez/WBC

During Monday's meeting between the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF), their leaders reached agreements to benefit the sport.

At the meeting, which was held in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico - Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar (WBC), Gilberto Jesus Mendoza (WBA) and Darryl Peoples (IBF) met face to face.

Among the agreements reached, is that a tournament is expected to find a single division world champion, in order for fans to recognize a single champion by 2016.

Rules pertaining to the official weigh-in was another fundamental point; WBC rules applied pre-weighins 30 days, one week and one day before the fights, and it is expected that all boxing bodies will adopt this rule to benefit the fighters.

The three entities also agreed for a stricter anti-doping tests, the use of certificated gloves and total respect to ranked fighters.

Sulaiman, Mendoza and Peoples will discuss these topics with their respective board of governors and will meet again on September 24 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to discuss these important issues.

Dan Rafael with some news today:

Aug 9, Porter-Brook is off (should appear on a date TBD). Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson is on...but not against each other.
Topping the show will be junior welterweight champ Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) with junior welterweight titlist Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KOs) defending on the undercard.
Neither has an opponent yet, but Golden Boy's intention, if they both win, is to match them later in the year to unify their titles. That means Garcia, who talked about a move to welterweight following his tough decision win against Mauricio Herrera on March 15, probably will remain at 140 pounds for at least two more fights before moving up next year.

On Cotto's next opponent:
Arum said that Cotto would likely return in December -- again on HBO PPV -- at Madison Square Garden.
"We're thinking about the possibility of making Cotto and (Timothy) Bradley," Arum said.
"We're talking but we'd have to work (the weight) out. We haven't gotten that far yet."

that's a fine plan...if porter-brook isn't going to be on that date throw it on Floyd's undercard in September

I have no desire to see Cotto-Bradley at middleweight or the fight in general

If Arum, HBO, and Showtime have been disappointed in numbers than start building up the cards for PPV's to encourage buys. Putting Porter-Brook on a PPV undercard would be a great start.

Peterson and Garcia really don't need an interim fight before they meet...but if this is what it takes before matching them up. :ehh: Not too surprised it could happen like this. I am of the belief that Garcia moving up to 147 may not be in his best interest win/loss wise. At 140 he is the man. At 147, he is one of many guys...a lot who I would favor over him. As long as he can make weight 140 is a good division for him.

Cotto-Bradley does nothing for me. Just shows how at 154 right now Canelo is the only name. There are other good fighters, but no one who can produce ratings for the paycheck Cotto wants. And it appears Cotto isn't quite ready to step in vs. full fledged MW regularly yet.

Man, fukk all these ppv's. No matter how good you stack some of them cards, it don't mean shyt if the main event ain't ppv worthy. You can't tell me Canelo/Lara and Canelo/Angulo were ppv worthy when we got Canelo/Trout on regular Showtime last year.

I can understand Pac/Bradley 2 being ppv since the 1st one was ppv and you had two top 10 p4p boxers going against each other, but Cotto/Martinez should have been regular HBO. I can understand Floyd/Maidana being ppv since Floyd is at that level where he won't make the same bread if he was on regular Showtime.

So besides Floyd and Pac fights being on ppv which is understandable (they both should try to get on regular tv and make $ off the sponsors, but that's cool), all of these other nikkas need to.... :camby:

If you wanna create ppv stars you gotta build opponents together with a succession of fights. Canelo and Lara should have been on the same card twice already in showcase fights and then put them in against a fringe/contender in the 2nd fight and afterwards do the ppv so fans can compare the two and see the interest build. Hardcore fans already got interest, but you need to do shyt like that to get the casuals buzzing.

what about the WBO though?

fukk 'em.

Isolate, blackball and make the title worthless. Hopefully this will eventually lead to all of the major sanctioning bodies merging into one singular entity (like the NFL/AFL NBA/ABA). So we can have more clarity in the sport and weed out all the frauds.

I also see no reason why they shouldn't draw down the weight classes down to about 9 or 10 which will also assist in weeding out the frauds.
