I had a good time with this one for the most part. When you got me dreading sundown in the film, that’s when I know the atmosphere is nailed down well. Despite the many jump-scares, this was still a cerebral, slow-churn horror akin to an A24 work. If you’re going in expecting a James Wan type film, you’ll likely be disappointed upon walking out. It is not that.
The first two acts felt like it was really building up to something special and then similarly to Candyman, the last act just fell apart in more ways than one.
Rebecca Hall felt like the film’s saving grace many times. Her acting was so real and it never let the story become stale. It feels like she depicts sad, troubled characters in every movie I watch her in and I feel sorry every time….she be killing them roles though.
The hyped and all-time horror jump-scare that I kept hearing about didn’t do it for me, but the way the film was crafted and its depiction on depression/paranoia made up for that. This has been a really good month for horror.
