Old article, worth the read. Kinda explains why the controls are so good. I wonder if Shigeru Miyamoto had something to do with the new abilities.
---

The Weekly Famitsu has published a new lengthy interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary developer who created Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda.

In the interview, Miyamoto commented on his involvement in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He said he wasn’t excessively involved in the game’s development and mainly focused working on its controls, which is something important to him.

Miyamoto was also involved in the early stages of the project, such as deciding its base concepts and direction it would take in its first 30 minutes. After that, he left the rest of the work to other developers and wished them good luck.

Besides Breath of the Wild, Miyamoto spoke about what the concept behind “creator” was to him. He believes that nobody else except God could be called a creator, and he considers himself as an editor. He cites what Shigesato Itoi once said (translated by BlackKite and compiled by Japanese Nintendo):

“[Being called] Creators or Creations are absurd.” The only one who may be called a Creator would be God. Nobody is doing any Creations and what all of them are doing is Editing. Miyamoto agrees with this and considers himself as an Editor. People would just repeat editing things they had absorbed in the past, and the results will be different for each person. The most important thing for Miyamoto to make games right now is the sensation that is similar to throwing a dart with one’s own style – without bothering with scientific approaches like angles or stances – and having it land exactly where one wants it to be.

----
Miyamoto directing the first 30 minutes of the game and telling them to figure the rest out is hilarious.

Nintendo gets away with stuff that wouldn't fly with other companies. The original BOTW was a Wii U game and this is coming out 6 years later and graphically it barely looks any different and they are reusing the map but adding some floating islands. Literally looks like a big DLC but they have the audacity to charge an extra 10 dollars for this.

Yes I'm furious they're expanding on arguably the greatest game of all time that was genre changing.

Don't expect too much of sequels, but a new game with a new team....4-6 years is way too much time.

Laugh at the combat but when I ask about Spiderman or gow combat show me the exact same type of video and act like it's revolutionary

All of this is allowed because it's Nintendo... Just like how they are able to charge full price for ultra low effort remakes. The gap between the releases of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West is about the same and you can see that Forbidden West looks notably better than Zero Dawn

Nintendo is literally reusing the same map from the original and the graphics don't look much better. Even sounds like they recycled the same sound effects as well.

They're not showing much because there's not much to show. It looks like the first game. It'll be as good as the first one but i really doubt its going to hit the same. It'll be like walking down goty memory lane. The whole time you'll be sitting there going "man FROM Software really went from Sekiro to Elden Ring like it was nothing in a smaller amount of time.." it is what it is though. The reviews will be high and the $70 will be deducted from your account. Then like Ragnarok people will come around to the truth later this year.

Dumb comparison as they're both literally different games outside of being "open world." Horizon is more of a RPG game with third person shooter/action gameplay with detailed story telling.

BOTW is more like a create-your-own-adventure game that just so happens to take place in an open world. Imo BOTW felt directionless and boring at times due to a lack of an engaging storyline. Conversely, Horizon was also boring at times because I wasn't really feeling the story for the majority of the game up until near the end and I couldn't really care about Aloy like that. I beat both eventually but I didn't like either of them that much, to be honest. I do like Forbidden West though that was way better.

For me Zelda's combat was not really great(No, I don't care about using random tricks with the sheikah slate and stuff to fight enemies because it really didn't matter. You could just beat the game with a stick making the other elements not needed.) Also, the lack of dungeons and the milquetoast soundtrack didn't help it. There were great moments in the game though but they were far too few and in between.
