The 76-year-old Florida woman who was knocked to the ground with a single punch from a brutish stranger says she’s thrilled her attacker is behind bars.
Douglas Wingo was arrested Saturday for the alleged Wednesday attack on Janet Palm. The single-strike beating on a Daytona Beach street left Palm with a broken nose, a cracked skull and internal bleeding.
"I think it's fantastic because he needs help," Palm told WESH of the arrest.
Surveillance video caught a passerby confronting Palm as she walked along a sidewalk Wednesday.
The 76-year-old said she was on her way to develop photographs at a nearby store when Wingo walked up to her and asked, “Where's the f-----g police? Where's the f------ police?”
When she said, “I don’t see any police,” Wingo punched her, she said.
Wingo walked off after the attack, Daytona Beach police said. Several passersby ignored Palm, who was lying on the ground, before someone finally called for help, Chief Mike Chitwood said.
"Not only do you have this scumbag out there that just sucker punches this woman, but you have the apathy of people who were driving by or walking by that kind of like just let it roll off their back," he said.
Palm was treated at a local hospital for her injuries, and tipsters who watched the surveillance video led police to Wingo on Saturday.
