Just Blaze is one of the best producers in Rap and amongst the elite. He has personally invested and dedicated time into several projects artists and careers that didn't pan out however. Why is this? Let's take a look...

Saigon - The story never told.

Dude was actually compared to 50 at one point. Label politics and red tape end up burrying his anticipated debut album. By the time it dropped the Hype was dead. :mjcry:

Album was very well produced and has some of the best sequencing I ever heard. It's a shame it never made noise.

XV

Just was a fan of this guy's movement and latched on to him early worked and promoted him to no avail... XV was supposed to be that regular peoples rapper. Had a lane but never caught on and eventually got left in the past. He had a lot of good looks that just didn't pan out for some reason

Slaughterhouse - The shelved album

Recorded for Shady records the now infamous shelved group album that had an all-star producer team helmed by Blaze and Illmind including others. This was supposed to be the last hope in redemption for the group. Slaughterhouse has/had a niche fanbase of bar-barians... Fans that just wanted to hear raw rhymes. Shady records sadly had made them compromise into doing some awful attempts at hit records on their previous effort.

This was shaping up to be a rap nerds dream. Finally their fans would get what they really wanted and hadn't touched on since the first album and mixtapes. Something went sour in the background and the project got shelved. Leaving the group dejected and forcing members to move on. Fans lost again

Jay Electronica

The myth, the legend and the flop. Just Blaze took interest in his career early just like with Saigon and XV... Pushed his legend during the Act 1 era to build hype. They ended up working on several songs we heard and others that are lost in limbo still.

We have heard excuses... For years it was almost done. At one point he even blamed the delay on Nas because he was waiting on a verse... :childplease:. As time went by Jay click hopped from Just studio to Puffs couch and finally the roc nation lobby but has yet to deliver a debut album a decade + later. Some fans still cling to hope :mjlol:

Question is how does one who is a super producer end up with so much vaulted heat potentially (Dr. Dre aside)

That shyt is like a curse :mindblown:

XV was a client, that aint on him. the other have crossed my mind, it does seem like every project hes an exec on either never comes out or gets botched

you wonder if its clearances, because he has let go more material than he ever has before the past couple years.

I think it's more than sample clearances. Just Blaze can prob replay whatever elements he needs to

When I heard Saigon album to be honest it sounded like subject matter that would rub a label the wrong way.

Great thread. I still remember Time magazine declaring Saigon the next Kanye West and hyping his upcoming album. I had heard of him before then of course but seeing him get such a big shoutout had me thinking his project was coming out very soon. Nope...

Most of these projects share a similarity: they were supposed to come out around the time sample clearances were getting out of control and the south was taking over with non-sample beats. I think most of these were expensive niche projects and Just ultimately decided it wasn't worth it. Other cases like Jay Electronica...we all know what that was

was surprised at how half-assed it was, it kind of clued me in that certain producers are best in the lab and not everyone is an Exec

yea, he was on Atlantic which is a graveyard, but they could have done better. the Buckwild beat was boring, so much time had passed that you could tell the Kanye beat was from 04-05, and it was a throwaway. Just overproduced Clap, that wasnt the epic 6 minute track he envisioned. there was so many mistakes that it marred the good shyt like Preacher/Friends etc

the songwriting was weak, Sai had lost some hunger during the process. thats on the exec and main producer to get your talent back in the zone. dont feel he did that

He’s a perfectionist and works really slow. It’s a curse more than anything else.

Wasn’t he involved with Billy Bathgate?

I think I just enjoyed the sequencing but it definitely could be called over produced that's not a lie at all.

Don't Believe the Hype
Already been mentioned, and I know as much as the next guy, but I'm sure sample clearances had something to do with it.

Just Blaze is primarily a sample producer and, as such, relies on the necessity of samples being cleared. He's had several notable sample mishaps:
  • "Oh Boy" record not being cleared prior to Cam running to Flex to get it played
  • "Breathe" (doesn't the OG publisher have 100% of the pub share on that track?)
In the music "business", these label heads would prefer going the non-sampled beat route for many reasons:
  1. it's cheaper
  2. less headaches
  3. it's also the wave since like mid-aughts
That said, what the f*ck do I know? lol

If Just produced an entire album for someone, best believe I'm checking for it.
