“Here is how the internship scam works. It’s not about a “skills” gap. It’s about a morality gap.

1) Make higher education worthless by redefining “skill” as a specific corporate contribution. Tell young people they have no skills.

2) With “skill” irrelevant, require experience. Make internship sole path to experience. Make internships unpaid, locking out all but rich.

3) End on the job training for entry level jobs. Educated told skills are irrelevant. Uneducated told they have no way to obtain skills.

4) As wealthy progress on professional career path, middle and lower class youth take service jobs to pay off massive educational debt.

5) Make these part-time jobs not “count” on resume. Hire on prestige, not skill or education. Punish those who need to work to survive.

6) Punish young people who never found any kind of work the hardest. Make them untouchables — unhireable.

7) Tell wealthy people they are “privileged” to be working 40 hrs/week for free. Don’t tell them what kind of “privileged” it is.

8) Make status quo commentary written by unpaid interns or people hiring unpaid interns. They will tell you it’s your fault.

9) Young people, it is not your fault. Speak out. Fight back. Bankrupt the prestige economy.”

Instead of complaining about the system, learn how to work it

An acute observation =/= complaint

I see what you're saying and I definitely agree...but to the average college grad who's drowning in debt and the only thing available are unpaid internships that used to be fully paid jobs, good paying jobs that require 2-5 years experience minimum, and low level service jobs that barely pay enough to cover rent and bills, trying to work this system is like trying to climb MT. Everest with no equipment whatsoever.

I love how on these forums someone always has to leave a short-sighted comment like this.

unpaid internships are a frigging joke, they always give you that bs that maybe they will hire you at the end :heh: yeah right

To be fair, it depends where you go. At my internship, I was going to get a job there but I mentioned at the interview I was going back to school and that was that :sadcam:

You have a better chance of transitioning from internship to a job through a school program because a) it looks good that company is hiring grads and b) the school looks good as well which means it raises your chances of getting a job there. Most of my friends that did an internship through school got the job after the probabation/internship time. Depends on the field as well :manny:

They really are.

And the moment anybody in those unpaid internships asks for a REAL job, what happens?

They fire their ass and hire someone else willing to work for peanuts and "something to put on a resume".

*Did a paid internship for 16 months in the asset management industry...in mid office for the 2nd largest money manager in the USA*

*Consequently, has received prestigious investment banking (think RBC Capital Markets) and regulatory environment accounting interviews (SEC for instance) that he wasnt getting before the internship*

*Entering my senior year now and i received an email this morning from the Accounting faculty's Associate Dean.. (who just happens to be my favourite professor :why:) saying the (insert philanthropic organization) is interested in students to help them with regards to the analysis and due dilligence of direct impact/private equity investments. The dean messaged me DUE TO MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE AT SAID INVESTMENT MANAGER*

Hopefully these interviews come full force this fall though. That opportunity I just listed sounds like a great one though even if its unpaid. As long as I can fit in within working part time, studying and having 18 hours of class a week I'm all game.

Go to school and drink, party, smoke weed and not get involved outside the classroom brehs :snoop:
Neglect the need to work on your craft and network brehs.
