They're both dope but I remember more about the prestige than the illusionist. I think the performances in the prestige are better, the final twist hits harder, and it goes directions I couldn't predict. Illusionist, while dope, is still a romance movie that's about a man getting back his lost love. Dope, yes, but prestige gets at a bit more: obsession, determination, and the lengths someone will go to in order to be the best. Hugh Jackman's character lost everything in order to be the best and the ill shyt? He was told most of the truth in the beginning and couldn't or wouldn't listen to it because he just had to keep going.

How did it not work ?

People have had their theories

The viewer is seeing what Bale is reading in a diary...a diary that he is being lied to in...

the movie is being shown from the perspective of that diary

That is why Cutter says in the end , "You won't find the secret. You want to be fooled." So keep that in mind and then the movie is really a 2 hour long simple magic show, intended to trick its viewers, and that's exactly what it does!.

If Bordon knew about Tesla and his machine( which he did as in his diary), why would he be intent to give that information to his number one rival Angier, as his diary was specifically intended to be read by Angier. So why would Bordon be still surprised as to how Angier performs the "Real Transported Man" trick? . Borden clearly knew who Nikola Tesla was and what he could and could not do. Tesla tried to explain Angier and fooled Angier, He pulled the wool over Angier's eyes with the cat and the top hat, WHO CANT FIND MULTIPLE BLACK HATS AND CATS. Angier fell right into his trick, gave him money, Tesla left a piece of shyt and Angier realized the key to a good trick is taking the real secret to the grave.

The point of this film is the whole movie was a magic trick. We were tricked into believing the machine actually worked. This movie is not "Science Fiction Movie", ......So why would they suddenly spring science fiction on us. They didn't, we were tricked into believing it was a working cloning machine. This movie is "Mystery, Thriller, Drama".

you stupid nikka? you cant read?

tesla knew he coukdnt make a madhine like that so he took dudes money and tricked him by placing all those hats outside and shyt.

swindled that nikka for some funds

let me walk yall through that scene again when tesla leaves and angier gets to the "finished" machine

preface: Angier paid a substantial sum of money for a machine to transport him(we know logically such technology didnt exist then and doesnt exist now)
p: Tesla upon introducing himself to angier attempts to trick him again using the trick of conducting electricity with the lightbulb, Angier clearly impressed(electricity was relatively unknown then)

1. Tesla realizes he cant give Angier a machine that actually transports him but rather one of his usual static electricity inducing bulbs.
2. In order to trick Angier he "tests" the machine on a cat as well as a hat....seemingly with no effect(notice the build up here on the trick)
3. Angier upset and feeling as if he wasted a ton of money for nothing, yet when he goes outside upset he finds the exact same hat everywhere along with another black cat (all of these things could have been set up before hand and purchased acquired with Angier's money)
4. Angier attempts to use the machine but it cuts the scene before you see what actually happens

the only time you revisit that scene is on Angier's death bed. And you are led to believe that he killed the "copy"

but in reality it was still a ruse. The reality was Tesla gave Angier an idea to run with, and a machine to accomplish it. Yet he'd still have to perform his showmans ship. The lightning, just like the lightning used in bordens trick was all special effects. Playing on the audiences lack of knowledge of electricity

Angier knew he was dying and even in the end defended his trick. No matter how bleak it was. A magician in those days was only as good as his best trick. And through Borden and Cutter would be his only legacy. There was only Root all along. And getting back at Root for double crossing him he has the box placed under the stage thus killing him and also incriminating Borden. The other boxes were also doubles thus preventing anyone from TRULY knowing what the trick was.

the movie even in the end attempts to trick you. Movies like this are rare because of the depth being presented and simpletons who enjoy magic just want to believe in something extroadinary. But the truth is it was all a simple illusion

i know yall dont want to believe that but ive had sex to this movie so much that i pretty much remember it like the back of my hand. The whole "tenor" of the movie also supports this theory. Now you COULD believe it actually did it but that is in fact the purpose of the movie. To have you thinking and wondering if it was a trick or not.

When you watch Criss Angel or David Blaine you want to believe its a simple trick but your eyes deceive you

just talking about it its amazing how well they captured the spirit of magicians in a movie

this.

i watched the movie just now off the strength of this thread. I really appreciate it brehs b/c I thoroughly enjoyed it. so much so I cannot wait to watch again. the machine definitely didn't work. the fact that Tesla's assistant was such an enthusiastic fan of magic and appeared to admire Angier was a big red flag for me. he would not be able to resist assisting in a magic "trick" that would fool one of the greatest magicians in London. another red flag... the assistant appeared to be attached to the cat.. it was his pet right? why did the cat not have a name? "you are responsible for what happens to this animal" then after the machine is finished the cat prances off like the stray that it was heading towards the cat nip strategically placed around the hats. hats that closely resembled the hat Angier wore throughout... w/ch would be familiar to someone who caught at least 7 of his London shows.

excellent excellent excellent movie. I'm going to watch Momento again. I was high as fukk the only time I watched it and wasn't that impressed. I now have a feeling I did myself a disservice by not watching it clear headed. Nolan just might be a genius....

Saw both late, in 2007, and I remember The Prestige leaving a lasting impression, a surreal, twisty story, with top notch acting, the kind of movie that doesn't or wouldn't get made as often now.

The Illusionist, was a lesser movie, but it has been 13 years since I watched it.

same

there were deep philosophical questions in that movie. Definitely my favorite of Bale and Jackman
