Theres been so many examples of teams winning after long layoffs. Also if the team plays a long 7 game series and loses its "oh they were tired from the LCS" if they win in 4 games its "oh a long layoff"
It was just random that the Tigers lost in 06, yes they were the better team but so was every team the Cards played in the offs that year not to mention the Tigers beat the Yankees who were better than they were. It just happens. If anything they lost cause their pitchers couldnt field which has nothing to do with a long layoff.
I think them playing two real games vs a minor league team is stupid.
