It's a De Niro directed film about the early days of the OSS/CIA.

Damon's character is said to mirror famed counter intelligence officer James Jesus Angleton, but more accurately serves as a proxy for the glamorous and insular Groton/Yale establishment types who once ran the American spy agency.

In real life, after being betrayed by Kim Philby, Angleton became convinced of there being a mole inside the agency and spent a couple decades trying to locate him. He ruined a number of careers in the process and was ultimately forced to resign after an investigation into his conduct (likely a result of other Church committee investigations into CIA conduct).

Establishment types don't really exist at the agency anymore (now filled with Mormons) and it's impossible for most to understand just how much influence they had.

Movie is long and not always focused but worth the watch if you're interested in this era of intellectuals, wonks, and establishment types. Also check out books:

The Very Best Men - Evan Thomas
The Wise Men - Evan Thomas/Walter Issacson
The Best and the Brightest - David Halberstam

There is an old PBS Frontline about Angleton called uh, "The Spy Hunter" though, you're unlikely to find it anywhere online.

Watching this is like watching a Whit Stillman movie or something. It's of some sociological interest to most people as again, these WASP establishment types don't really run Washington anymore (or Wall Street).

A lot of these guys were considered the brightest but you know, made some amazing errors in judgement. Most of em sort of faded away in the sixties and seventies, kind of lamenting their inability to turn America into a truly great empire.

Mormons are attractive targets as they tend to be educated, clean (can easily pass a polygraph), community oriented, and well traveled (polyglots). Alot of them played sports in high-school, team/service oriented, believe in something bigger, etc.

They are also great proselytizers.

Can find them in a bunch of federal spaces for the aforementioned reasons.

Decent flick. Goofy story angle with the son that could have been left out...but meant to show the depth of commitment involved.

Better story would have been Bill Donovan.

This is an underrated movie, yea it's long, not alot of action.. but it's interest me for some reason just with it being about the origins of the CIA. The thing that always stood out was the depiction of the Order of Skull and Bones rituals in the movie. It's a gloss over of what they do but you NEVER see iit depicted in media like that. I was surprised DeNiro was able to get away with putting that in the movie..
