National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, maker of several anti-breast cancer drugs. The aim of NBCAM at the start was to promote mammography as the most effective weapon against breast cancer.
(basically it was started by the pharmaceutical companies that profit off of breast cancer to get more women to see if they have it and have new customers)
they focus on treating cancer instead of prevention because there is no profit in prevention
The real Origin of the Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer:
68-year-old Charlotte Haley, the granddaughter, sister, and mother of women who had battled breast cancer. Her peach-colored loops were handmade in her dining room. Each set of five came with a card saying: “The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.
Early in 1992, Alexandra Penney, then the editor in chief of Self Magazine, was busy designing the magazine’s second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue.
They along with Estee Lauder approached Ms. Haley to relinquish the ribbon and let them take it to a national level. Ms Haley saw through the bs and realized that it would be used as a marketing tool to help sell cosmetics and said no.
Estee Lauder consulted their attorney and decide to just steal the concept and change the color to pink.
