In the spring of 1949, the 332nd Fighter Group, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, participated in the inaugural Continental Air Gunnery Meet in Las Vegas. This event was the U.S. Air Force's counterpart to the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school, which would be established 20 years later.
