One of the great movies of the superhero genre, Richard Donner's Superman is a cinematic education. But, after Ms. Tessmacher took that Kryptonite off from around Supes and mouth-raped him with that kiss, the movie was a wrap.
But before that, my GOD. Phenomenal film making
First off, that extended ass opening titles with John Williams' Superman theme goin hard, with the credits flying by you in sweet 5.1 and with a space backdrop. That whole shyt just gets you anticipating and expecting greatness.
The way it was implemented in Superman II was just
Then, the pan up to Krypton and the 2nd theme kicks in with that slow rise of the horns.
The scene with Jor-El about to pass judgement on Zod, Ursa, and Non was pretty dope. The breakdown by Jor-El and Zod's defiance was some dope shyt. Brando and Stamp setting the bar high for acting throughout the film, which was answered by Gene Hackman
The scene where the council was like at Jor-El's claim to Krypton blowing up was always forgettable to me, but it was important in the long run.
Baby Kal-el flying through space and getting them Dr. Venture lectures before he crashes was aight. He crashed, the Kents find him, his high school scene, and Pa dying were ok.
When he went out to the barn and found the crystal, it was a classic moment in film history
The walk to the north pole, the throw, and the emergence of The Fortress of Solitude was a dope scene. When he goes in and starts up that voicemail from Jor-El is when the height of the drama commences.
The sequence of his 12 year education plays out in another space montage, with Jor-El educating him on the accumulated knowledge of the known galaxies.
"They can be a great people, Kal-El, if they wish to be. They only lack the light to show them the way. For this reason above all - their capacity for good - I have sent them you... my only son." wow:
He grown, then goes off to be Superman
The final great part is how Luthor contacts him with that high ass frequency transmission that got all the dogs in Metropolis trippin.
"The only thing with less than four legs that can hear this message, is you Superman."
There's a lot of other moments, like Superman busting through machine guns, flame throwers, and freeze setups to get to Luthor's lair. Great acting by Gene Hackman pretty much is the only great thing remaining throughout the movie (and Miss Tessmacher's titties ), which is where I pretty much check out.
The first half plays out brilliant as hell, with classic movie making on deck. The rest was kinda with him spinning the world back to fukk with time, but I would have felt that shyt much more if I was older when it came out. Hell, if I was alive
I only have the DVD, but that 5.1 mix goes pretty hard, and I can't wait to see how it is on bluray. Regardless how I feel about half of the movie, this is still one of my all-time favorites
