was doing some research on African-Americans on TV and found a show "Bird of the Iron Feather" which is the first black soap opera to air in the United States.
It aired in January of 1970 on Chicago Public TV Station WTTW and ran for 21 episodes before it's $600,000 funding ran out. The show was created by Richard Durham who was the editor of the Nation of Islam newspaper Muhammed Speaks.
This is definitely not your typical soap opera subject matter as you'll see from the opening line, and the opening few minutes
