"Robert McCall’s famous stopwatch might be running out of time. The Equalizer 3 star Denzel Washington returns as the unstoppable and unflappable McCall in what may very well be the final installment of director Antoine Fuqua’s action-packed series. The filmmaker addressed the possibility of a fourth movie in the August 17 issue of Total Film magazine:
"I don’t see another one in it for me. From my conversations with Denzel, this is the final one [for him] as well."
Washington first played the role back in 2014 when McCall locked horns with Nicolai Itchenko (Marton Csokas). The character was also known as “Teddy” Rensen. While Nicolai had ties to the Russian mafia, McCall will face off against a more youthful variant of the Cosa Nostra (Sicilian mafia).
Fuqua discussed McCall’s adversaries in the same interview:
[EGG]"A lot of them are the younger-generation type. They’re a little edgier, a little more aggressive. It feels dangerous because it’s not just drugs and stuff. You’re dealing with terrorists even more now.”

The Equalizer 3 will break new ground for the series because McCall has moved to Italy. He also won’t have the assistance of his dear confidante Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo). Susan was tragically murdered by McCall’s friend-turned-foe Dave York (Pedro Pascal) in The Equalizer 2 (2018).
Could The Equalizer 3 Be the End?
Denzel Washington returns in September as the fearsome Robert McCall, but The Equalizer 3 could be the final installment in Antoine Fuqua’s film series. If that’s the case, the creatives were definitely thinking big for the last go-round. During an interview with Extra TV, Fuqua talked a little bit about the southern area in Italy that the film was shot in: the Amalfi Coast.
Fuqua also revealed that his team discussed shooting the third installment somewhere overseas in Europe prior to the start of filmming. And screenwriter Richard Wenk — he also penned the other two Equalizer films — wrote a “great” story that centered on the aforementioned Italian area Washington introduced Fuqua to.
While Bill Pullman doesn’t appear to be reprising his role as McCall’s friend Brian Plummer, Washington’s co-star in 2004’s Man on Fire, Dakota Fanning, teams up with Mr. McCall. And when asked by Extra TV if they ever wanted to work together on a project again, Washington broke out his trademark sense of humor. “She was too big, you know,” Washington told Extra as Fanning busted out laughing. “She was too big a star. I called over and over. And she said, ‘Denzel who?’”
"Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall finds solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed," the official synopsis for The Equalizer 3 reads. "Now living in Southern Italy, he soon discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall becomes their protector by taking on the mafia."
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar, and Remo Girone, The Equalizer 3 opens in theaters on Friday, September 1."
