^2nd. It didn't mean shyt honestly. There was no computer or anything to run and see what was going on. You bought it. You bumped it. That's about it.

A little after that with the WU releases is when it became a bigger deal imo. That was a bit of an event with release dates and store displays and anticipation. Raekwon's first album was a pretty big deal where people were really waiting for it and all the channels and magazines were hyping it. WU was a big deal back then.

also quite a bit of ILLMATIC had been heard by the time it dropped.

pon its release, the album debuted at number 12 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 59,000 copies in its first week. However, its initial sales fell below expectations and its five singles failed to achieve significant chart success.

everybody cared. I mean it was dope but everyone knew that. Halftime was old by the time it dropped. It ain't hard to tell had been out for a while. I think Who's world is this had been out and same with one love.

So a lot of people were only gettin maybe 5-6 new songs.

I mean people loved it but people were waiting for 3 years on Nas. BIG had party and bullshyt and that stuff his newer style and ready to die just kind of came out of nowhere. Plus he came out later in the year when hip hop was just getting bigger and bigger.

I mean Illmatic was a big deal but everyone knew it would be dope and what they were getting. People were thrilled with it when it came out. there just wasn't really anywhere to go run and tell people. You copped it because you knew about it and you knew it was coming.

Juicy was on mid day radio. Same with MTV during the day. He was being played in clubs at night time. So it was a bit different. etc..etc..
