TLDR - So the culture "war" - is a misnomer, but even if considered it a war - The good guys lost the war, and some of them are switching over to the other side.

I always look at the so-called culture war as the backlash against White People losing the overt and legal rights to discriminate and harm Black Men, but generally Black People. Every group that's not Black Men has seen considerable gains. And even though Black Male life is better now than it was in the 50s - Black men have not gained nearly as much.

Y'all know the history already.

Civil Rights for Black people, leads to the Women getting rights, leads to ALL of the other Racial/Ethnic groups getting power, Disabled People, and then later Gay People and Trans people.

Every time one of "those" people gets to be treated like a human being, White Folks get consequences for their poor behavior.

Where there was no recourse for all of us prior to desegregation, now there is a little bit of recourse.

And what little was given, has been scaled back significantly since the 70s'. Lots of laws were put on the books in those days, but courts have made it very difficult for people to get justice.

Moreover, a lot of behavior from them - that is racist in result is not racist in process.
Gerrymandering is an easy one.
Voter ID laws is another one.
Algorithms of all sorts have a way of reflecting the actual racism in society.

(White and Non-Black) Dems and Libs used to see this BS for what it was.

But now?

The Democrats, so-called liberals/progressives - whose regime gained power because of all of these groups getting power - are turning their backs on the very people that allowed them to be able to govern in the first place.

I hear Dems talk about the "excesses of the #metoo movement"...
"We should not have said "Defund the Police"...

And some people in newly "protected" groups - are also turning their backs on the Democrats and other "allies" as well, and joining the "winning" team.

In that time, the side of the righteous,
  • has continually lost our institutions
  • been coopted by/paid the do nothings/incrementalists
  • profit from the decline
  • gone over to the side of the victorious.
  • Unplugged from it all

Yet our best trained, best educated, best equipped
Best prepared troops refuse to fight
As a matter of fact, it's safe to say that they would rather switch
Than fight

It's just a distraction for the aristocracy/burgeoisie to fleece the proletariat/peasants
it's funny that we all know this is true; and then people refuse to turn around and admit that yes, the average voter is not that informed, and prone to being swayed by these low level distractions

is the transgenda a real issue? NO. is it a stupid, ridiculous hill to die on? YES :why: that's all i've ever said

one of these things doesn't belong on this list. what don't trans people have the right to do?

this is the exact point where the Dems' culture war has jumped the shark :yeshrug:

the natural consequence of a nation that claims to be democratic but is captured by oligarchy. what else can we argue about if we cant argue about capitalism?

and civil rights are not culture war, they are actual politics. they involve the protection of the constitution over the various segments of the population. in many ways, the civil rights are the ultimate politics.

probably is, but looking at the way things are going, women dont have constitutional rights to abortion, so i think trans-rights are going to be state rights for a while.

while trans issues may be civil rights, they are often argued in a way that is disproportional and non-constitutional. actual trans activists dont seem to be in control of the conversation. cynical politicians from both the GOP and DNC are choosing how to use the issue to achieve some goal that has nothing to do with trans people. the GOP uses them as a boogie man and the DNC was using them as a symbolic stand-in for policy that would otherwise conflict with the desires of wealthy donors. the willingness to throw them under the bus so soon after the election shows just how cynical the party has been.

so they might be real constitutional issues, but they are too politically small to be worth the political capital in national politics. this is mostly a state fight, i think.

That means that every time you come across one transgender playing collegial women's sports, there are 12,000 transgenders who are trying/succeeding in killing themselves.

From a utilitarian perspective, whether or not someone plays sports in college is not as meaningful as whether a person tries to kill themselves. This is why Republicans are so adept at culture wars. They reframe the conversation so that any attempt to help a vulnerable population is excessive.

It's the same playbook they have when talking to white people about Affirmative Action or DEI which makes it all the more disappointing seeing other black people react against transgender rights in a way that mirrors uninformed white people re: Affirmative Action/DEI.

i'm sorry that these people are so deeply mentally disturbed. that does not give them the right to invade women's spaces :yeshrug:

Dems are wrong on the issue. period.

if you believe men should be able to compete against women in female sports then you're just wrong. it's like people are afraid to admit that men are on average physically superior to women. i (someone who isn't a coach) could take a team of the best under 16 boys in america right now and beat the best wnba team. women's sports have come too far to let it get b*stardized by males who can't hack it against other males.

If Dems want to keep the Trans folks in the tent - they need a better narrative to tell the rest of the polity.
