‘John Wick’ Prequel Event Series ‘The Continental’ Lands Albert Hughes as Lead Director – The Hollywood Reporter

Director Albert Hughes has checked into The Continental.

The filmmaker, who with his brother co-directed movies such as Menace II Society and The Book of Eli, has signed on to direct two episodes of Lionsgate and Starz’s three-installment event series based on the hit John Wick action movies that star Keanu Reeves.

Continental, which is set in the unique hotel for assassins in the Wick movies, was initially envisioned as spinoff series but was redeveloped as a three-night event series with movie length and movie budgets. The installments are to run about 90 minutes in length and, according to sources, have budgets upwards of $20 million.

Hughes will direct the first and third episode while executive producing all three. A director for episode two has not yet been chosen.

Slated for release sometime this September.

Producer Erica Lee:

”It’s young Winston and young Lance Reddikk, young Charon. The showrunners actually came, we heard a lot of pitches and we were debating whether or not we wanted to do a similar timeline of John Wick or an alternate timeline. We felt like doing a prequel, doing an alternate timeline gave us a lot of flexibility just in running parallel tracks.

“But also what I think people love so much about John Wick and the ‘John Wick’ world are learning about the hotels and the Easter eggs. We give so little about each character and about the hotel in each movie that I think people were really excited to learn more and dig deeper into The Continental like, what does the cleaner there look like? What is the staff like? How do you get into The Continental? How are the gold coins made? So, with this timeline and this setting, we’re allowed to do a really deep dive into that and explore a lot of that stuff.”

Don't expect the action to be on the level of the films, but hopefully it's on point.

Winston is a character that’s always intrigued Iwanyk. Looking back at the first movie, Iwanyk remembers that McShane was one of the last, “if not the last,” person they cast, and the producer says he basically got him on board for the role because it was shot in New York over Thanksgiving weekend – meaning Iwanyk could essentially offer McShane and his wife a paid Thanksgiving New York trip, with a little bit of work involved.

“My goal was actually to tone it down just a bit because we aren't John Wick,” he says. “And don't get into action fatigue because we are in multiple episodes and you have to delve into these characters and storylines, which in a two-hour movie, you have to keep it moving.”

But even John Wick toned down is still John Wick. In fact, Hughes teases that episode 3 has “57 minutes of action,” and Woodell says he and his castmates were constantly training. :leon:

Peacock announced the premiere date for “The Continental,” a prequel to the blockbuster “John Wick” franchise, at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

The series explores the origin behind the “John Wick” universe’s assassin hotel through the eyes of a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) as “he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind,” the logline explains.

The three-part event will debut on Friday, Sept. 22, followed by Part 2 airing Sept. 29 and Part 3 on Oct. 6.

This was actually good. Though Winston killing all of those assassins was a bit much. At least when John did it, he had a reputation. Winston has a couple of vets and grieving Asian.
