Is there such a thing? Where did it come from and how did it come into fruition?

Or is it just something pre-teen kids say in Youtube comments?

I understand the concept of real artistry, but when I see people talk about "you don't listen to real music", I can't help but feel the need to smack the fitted off their damn head

The question is, who or what exactly started this term and since when did people obsess over 90's boom bap and discourage every commercial, industrialized rapper

Its destructive to the culture brehs

People been saying Hip Hop is dead or "this isn't real Hip Hop" since the early 90s and even before. A lot of the shyt we call classic from the mid 90s etc was called out as not real hip hop for various reasons back in the day

True, wasn't gangsta rap considered one of the killers of hip-hop back in the day as well? Seeing that it was basically a shift from afro-centric raps to songs about drugs and guns?

I think that because hip hop is so young there is no seperarion of sub genres. There's so many different styles but they all have to compete on same platform for recognition. Music that might be more marketable takes the spot on a radio station and this makes fans of the other styles jealous and so they call it fake or trash but don't realize that it's all preference and opinion.

Then you could say that back in the 90s there was all kinds of music getting played on the radio. I'll say that fans are the problem. Most people don't buy music this makes record labels scared to get behind someone whose not making catchy tunes about bytches and champagne. Also I think back then the artist that cares about their craft also had to conform to what these labels wanted cause it was the only way they could eat. Now those artist that wouldn't want to fit into the label mold don't have to. The tour on mixtapes and YouTube views. It's good cause they're able to do what they want but bad cause they won't be able to get on the radio since it's run by the corporations.

They complain about mainstream commercial hip hop but when was the last time they actually bought a record? Then they laugh when you say you actually still buy CD's like :what: The labels are gonna support whatever sells, and the casual fans buying singles on iTunes are actually, unlike you, supporting the genre financially, and whether you like or not, money is what keeps the world spinning.
