I went into this year, thinking it was going to be a typical year. However,
Microsoft threw that way of thinking into a tailspin very early this year. I've been a
Microsoft fan, largely because it's PC adjacent. That said, with the news about Microsoft and even Sony eventually porting games to PC, for the third and final time, I'm Team Steam primarily and I will remain largely on this side.
Once I came to this conclusion, I decided to buy a large portion of my existing console games on Steam, buy games that I had for free on Epic on Steam as well as new games on Steam.
So, when I got to adding these purchases up for the year, I was both surprised and not surprised, if that makes any sense. Surprised by the amount of games, not particularly surprised at the amount of money spent. That grand total is at the bottom of this post on a spreadsheet. That said, let me show what I did this year.
What did you get this year?
Games:
Switch/PS/Xbox Physical
Switch/PS/Xbox Physical Special Editions
Switch/PS/Xbox Digital
Hardware
PC *Picture Bomb*
Games listed in reverse chronological order as to when they were added to my library via purchase.
What were your favorite games?
Dragon Age: Veilguard
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Ara: History Untold
Palworld
What were your disappointments?
I can't a lot of action VR games anymore, seemingly to getting dizzy or my stomach hurting. Walkabout Golf and Beat Saber is fine as is my FitXR working out but now, others in moderation.
What were your surprises?
Palworld. I bought it for shyts, giggles and FOMO but underneath all of that is one of the best gaming loops I've ever experienced in my life. Derivative in monster design but that's about it. There is a reason as to why it is constantly in the Steam top 20 played to this day.
Did you take on any new genres?
Via Palworld, Survival/Crafting
Did some genres pass you by?
Nothing in 2024
What are you looking forward to next year?
Civilization VII comes out. Everything else is second.
For the benefit of gaming in 2024 and purchased in 2024 for gaming into 2025, that grand total is correct. Checked it 3x times. I'd post more pics but I ran into the 20 image limits of the post.
