Overall Nice Guy
Just want to go on a little of a rant here, and I don't think there's a Red Sox offseason thead so figured I'd start one up to see all the Boston fans thoughts on what's been a pretty quiet offseason so far.
Don't see us really swinging for the fences in free agency this season with a run at Josh Hamilton, nor do I think we should make one. There's no doubt that he's an excellent player (most of the time) but unless he's willing to take a 3 year deal with a team option for a fourth year, I wouldn't even touch him. We just lucked out with what could arguably be the biggest trade in Red Sox history and the last thing we want to do is cripple ourselves with more bad contracts
I don't have a problem with the Ross or Gomes signings. Both are supposedly good locker room veterans with pretty solid numbers. A lot of people thought it was an overpay with Gomes but I think they see him as another Cody Ross type bargain and would rather overpay a bit now in case he does put up good numbers in Fenway than have to pay him 3 times that amount for year 3. Gomes' numbers are identical to what Cody Ross put up last season for the most part and Ross is supposedly demanding 3/27. I think Ross and Gomes both getting 2 year deals shows that the Sox are willing to go through sort of a rebuilding transitional year here and then be back to competing for championships in 2014.
So I read that Mike Napoli is in town? Really? REALLY? Can someone please tell me what he has to offer that Saltalamacchia can't give us. I must be missing the point. Napoli batted .227 with 24 home runs... and guess what? Salty hit 225. with 25 home runs! What's the flipping difference? I guess you'd have to see Napoli go back to his career year where he batted .320 but I'm not sure I want to pay 4/60 or something crazy like that to find out. I'm not sure if he's asking for 60 million but I do know he wants 4 years. I really couldn't picture giving him a 4 year deal unless it's like 36 million.
That's all I got for now.
