Et in Arcadia ego...
The Boston incident reminded me of the movie The Siege, starring Denzel Washington. Which made me think of what would happen if there was a sustained, coordinated campaign of terrorism which occurred in London during the troubles in America, or akin to that which was portrayed in the movie in a major American city, like New York, Chicago, Boston, or D.C.? In the movie the president repealed the Posse Comitias Act, which essentially prevents the U.S. military from operating within the U.S. borders. Would you support the Delta Force, Green Berets, or any other Special Forces unit to root out the insurgents to operate in the U.S.? Western society has a tradition of ignoring, or turning a blind eye to expanded chief executive powers going back to Rome when they would elect a dictator during emergencies, the Supreme Court ignored Lincolns suspension of habeas corpus during the Civil War, and only took up the case of Ex Parte Milligan after the war was over. It doesnt matter whether the perpetrators are skinheads/white nationalists/white supremacists/Puerto Rican nationalists/black militants/Arabs/Pakistanis/Zionist Jews, or does it? Im as big a supporter of civil liberties as much as the next person, but whats the point of having civil rights if youre not alive to enjoy them? A lot of people may say Benjamin Franklin said if I may paraphrase, Show me a people who will give up their liberty for security, and I will show you a people who have neither., but again, whats the point of having civil liberties, if youre stuck inside your home, too scared to leave because youre afraid of getting blown up? Or do you believe domestic terrorism should be treated as a crime, and left to the domain of the FBI, and other law enforcement entities?
