Seung-Eun Kim reveals concept art for The Boondocks reboot, showcasing fan favorites, as well as teasing storylines from the now-shelved series.
Fans of The Boondocks got a glimpse at what the now-shelved TV series might have looked like.
On Oct. 28 and 30, Seung-Eun Kim revealed concept art for The Boondocks' reboot via X. Fans were also able to get a sense of possible themes and episodes of the series, as images of alternate versions of United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the popular Street Fighter character Cammy depict personalities taken far out of their usual contexts, in typical The Boondocks fashion. Many fans noted that the art style was homaging Capcom, a theory that Cammy's appearance appears to bolster.
Seung-Eun Kim is a renowned and multi-award-winning artist and director, having storyboarded episodes for Godzilla, Jackie Chan Adventures, The Batman, and more. Having also directed some of these series, his work was prolific in The Boondocks, with director credits for some of the most praised and controversial episodes like "The Story of Gangstalicious," "Let's Nab Oprah," "The Story of Thugnificent," and "Stinkmeaner Strikes Back." His episode "The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show" was initially banned in the United States for legal reasons.
The Boondocks Reboot Fizzled Out
The Boondocks was originally set to return after the heavily panned season 4 that aired in 2014, which saw no involvement from the original creator Aaron McGruder. A reboot with McGruder's return was announced in 2019 but by 2022 failed to materialize, before comments by Cedric Yarbrough (voice of Tom DuBois, Stinkmeaner) to the 1-on-1 w/Deuces suggested the project was indefinitely shelved. More recently, Gary Anthony Williams, the voice of Uncle Ruckus told fans to "never say never" in an interview with Double Toasted Interviews after having already recorded eight episodes for the new season. He also revealed that there had been multiple pauses in production before eventual resumption, providing cause for optimism. As for the tone of the show, Williams cited a new "beautiful" art style and praised the leadership of McGruder, who gave them license to improvise.
According to Max (HBO Max at the time), the shelved reboot could be described as: "The new series will follow the adventure of Robert 'Granddad' Freeman and his two grandsons, Huey and Riley, who after recently moving to Woodcrest realize that it’s been overtaken by Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime.
