Visionary Alabama inventor Lonnie Johnson may have the ‘gamechanger’ in battery technology
An Alabama success story may be close to the payoff of 25 years of largely self-funded, lone wolf research.
Forbes is reporting that Lonnie Johnson has a prototype manufacturing line already underway for a “gamechanger” all-solid-state battery that he says is safer, more powerful and cheaper to produce. This could open the way for electric vehicles that drive farther on charges, and electric grids that can store power more efficiently.
Johnson has largely worked with his own money, but has been helped along the way with $15 million in investments - $10 million more than his goal - including $1 million from Innovate Alabama last year.
He has also worked with Tuskegee University, home of the Dr. Lonnie Johnson Technology Research & Incubation Center. The school has also served as a professional pipeline for Johnson’s lab.
“We’re eager to get this out so people can compare and realize the real benefits,” Johnson said. “It’s not only superior technology—it’s cheaper to manufacture.”
