Buck O'Neil once said Babe Ruth faced Stachel Paige in a barn storming game and Paige was going on about how he was going to strike Ruth out. When he faced him, Ruth hit a bomb off him. O'Neil said it was the only time he ever saw Paige completely speechless.

You can argue Ruth isn't the greatest ever because of the era he played with segregation but Ruth would have been able to hit in any era....and pitch in relief when needed.

A lot of this is hearsay, but Fred Lieb is one of the many sportswriters/fans from that era that reported it..and he is as respected a journalist you'll find in sports.

I dismiss this stuff as crap. Babe was German Catholic. And many have commented and there are photos to support it, that Babe was very city white in his body pigmentation. All this is based on his broad knose, husky, gravelly voice, simple, innocent mentality, and his wanton carnal over-indulgences. Nothing more.

I don't think you'll ever find stone cold proof that he is 100% white or if he had a little black in him. I mean, he did speak German....but was called a n***** dating back to when he was a child in an orphanage with white kids, from what I've read.

I really don't care if he's white or not, just one of the many mysteries that will probably never be solved.
