It's a film from late last year but just seen it recently..
Choi Min-Sik is back in a film considered his best since "I Saw the Devil". Many know him as "Old Boy" or the main villain from "Shiri" but Choi has created a big name for himself with some of the wildest, craziest and most memorable roles in Cinema. I call him the Gary Oldman of Korea, cause he looks like Gary Oldman. This time around Choi brings a more subtle but still vicious character to the screen. Based off the real life person Admiral Yi Sunshin who defeated a fleet of 330 ships with 13ships of his own in the late 1500's. He is regarded as one of the best navy commanders in the world and died with an undefeated record in battles, despite never having received naval training or participating in naval combat prior to the war.
The story is basically of the battle of Myeongnyang and a brief surrounding of Joseon defeat at Chilchonryang. The film really doesn't waste alot of time with talk and focuses building on the plot with character development and extremely short bursts of action before the main event. The backgrounds, clothes, locations fit the story. The Music is underrated, the best film soundtrack to Danny Elfman's or Hans Zimmer's work. The action is brutal and realistic. The CGI and props are close to real as possible especially for an Asian film. Check out a film if you are fan of war films or Choi films.
