Crabbs

  • Football IQ - Sees too many plays a half second late and as a result he's late scraping over the top or shading coverage in zone. He's got elite physical tools to still make plays but his margin for error is going to be diminished at the pro level and he'd greatly benefit from working on anticipation to key attacks into the LOS.

Tackling - His range is tremendous. He'll influence more plays then he should, given his athleticism and explosiveness. Long arms provide a notable tackle radius. He's a plus tackler but could clean up his contact balance on plays that test his reach or on the edge of the LOS to be a more consistent finisher.

Block Shedding - Long arms are a big weapon in his game and you see him consistently stacking blockers with his reach. He's got some potent pop in his hands, too — he'll offset forward push and sit down to stack blockers and hold ground. Pairs his stack skills with lateral mobility and good upper body strength to disengage.

Competitive Toughness - Don't question his toughness — he played majority of Washington game with a broken thumb and hardly left the field. He's got ample explosiveness in his frame to provide jarring hits. Rally skills to the football are A+ when considering his effort level and overall range as an athlete.

Lateral Mobility - Sideline to sideline range is potent and allows him to consistently work to the football. Short area quickness is pretty sudden and he'll take OL by surprise if he's twisting or crashing across a gap — few OL are going to slide their feet with him and keep him framed sufficiently at the POA.

Coverage Skills - Wouldn't recommend working him in man to man until he adds more polish. Appreciate his eagerness to collision routes but often does so by abandoning leverage and overextending. Proficient in zone coverage underneath but his ability to key a QB and break on the ball in zone isn't where he'll make a living.

Gap Shooting Ability - This dude can get downhill in a hurry and when he decides it is go time, he's going to blow someone up. Could be a blocker or the ball carrier. Wish his anticipation was a bit better so he could utilize his explosiveness to beat blockers to the spot more consistently and square up the ball.

Feet/COD - Fluid. He's got quick feet and transitional quickness doesn't suffer at steep angles. Do wish he was more disciplined in scrape mode to gear down and ensure he's not overrunning contact — he's got some bad habits there. With that said, physical skill set is of an elite athlete and will help him overcome some poor tackle fits.

Flexibility - Dynamic range of motion through his hips and his rotational range of motion. It's most prevalent when scraping over plays to keep pads square or when hinging to hit landmarks in zone coverage in underneath areas. Can make himself super long, too — helpful in zone coverage and as a tackler.

First Step Explosiveness - Sheesh. This dude might have a rocket strapped on his back. He's got the GOODS when he's able to open his strides and attack. Acceleration is notable and his long speed in footraces down the sideline is really strong. Like his ability to generate a lot of power in short spaces to stun blockers, as well.

Summary - Troy Dye has the athletic profile of an impact defender at the NFL level. With his explosiveness, mobility, length and range, Dye has everything needed to be a plus starter — but he must quicken his play diagnosis and become a better defender in space to take good angles in his path to the football. Dye is currently a tick slow on seeing opportunities to attack and as a result will miss critical plays on the boundary or fail to get home when shooting gaps. Developmental starter.

Troy Dye, ILB, Oregon
Height: 6-4. Weight: 224.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2020): 3-4.
2/15/20: In 2019, Dye recorded 84 tackles with 2.5 sacks, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. He was a solid player for the Ducks and showed his toughness by playing with a cast on his hand at the end of the regular season.

OTOH that tells you what they really think of him to trade within the division. :heh:

I'm surprised we actually got something in return for him.
Yeah getting a 5th was a good trade but this nikka knows our whole defense

hes trash but he can give the OC all of our plays/audibles/etc

they’re gonna have to change alot of shyt up unless they just think Pitt will be trash amd won’t matter

I always felt like he was a "favor" pick for the Ravens. John convinced the front office that Jim had a "good guy that could make some plays for them." He's never been able to contribute in this system.

Zach Orr's little brother. He is a smaller coverage style LB that has some upside when blitzing. He needs to learn how to use his hips more when engaging offensive lineman in the run game. He needs to make better decisions and recognize running lanes when playing the run. He most likely will go undrafted. Might be a special teams contributor at some point in his career, but I'm not expecting anything more than that.

He's never available when I do my mock drafts and pick at 28, but he looks very dominant and active on the d-line. I doubt the Ravens pick him if he's available, but if they did, their d-line would probably be almost as dominant as the Niners 2019 d-line.

Crabbs

  • First Step Explosiveness - He doesn't have ideal burst off the edge and he's guilty of popping up at times out of his stance. When he's able to roll weight onto his down hand, he'll offer enough spring to create enough push to challenge the edge. He's much more effective in interior gaps or working after contact versus beating blockers to the spot.

Hand Technique/Length - My goodness. Packs a gnarly punch and his power counters are devastating in close quarters. His snatch and push/pull techniques manipulate blockers seemingly at will and his punch placement is consistent on the numbers at first contact to reset the line of scrimmage.

Pass Rush Counters - He's not the most diverse rusher but he's worked in ample tools over the course of 2019 to trust he'll win with counters. His inside rip is well timed and he'll steamroll through over-setting OTs. His best outside maneuver is his chop/rip. Long-arm is super effective too to roll back blockers and outreach opponent.

Flexibility - Doesn't illustrate a high level of lateral bend or lower half mobility. That said, he's super stout inline and if you task him with setting the edge vs. the run he'll win with leverage and stack to hold his ground. Not going to dip the inside shoulder with success. But it shouldn't be a hindrance given where he wins.

Run Defending - He's super effective here. Stacking up play-side runs consistently leads to a collapsed and firm edge of the D. Playing him in the B-gaps often nets quick penetration and he's instinctive to key on pullers and crash to the mesh point. His range isn't great in space but he's got great success in turning plays back inside.

Competitive Toughness - Stout. His anchor is super strong and only on a handful of occasions did he give ground off the POA. His motor runs hot and his second effort wins around the edge have come by looping back into plays or sifting through traffic to feel a QB climbing through the pocket. Power player at his core with hips and hands.

Tackling - His lack of lateral quickness and range is masked with wins to play on the plus side of the LOS and on account of his significant reach and extension skills. His finishing power to crash the pocket and get home to quarterbacks is quite strong and he's got some violent tackles when locking horns with the ball carrier.

Lateral Mobility - His ability to duck back inside on boundary rushes provides him with a greater pallet as a rusher versus what he'd otherwise have. He's effective to stick foot in the ground and drive to B-gap but when he needs to open his hips and drive outside he doesn't showcase spring or a lot of juice to win footraces to the edge.

Stand Up Ability - He won't offer any value to 3-4 teams who ask him to stand up on the edge. He doesn't have a promising profile to attack the LOS from wide angles and he doesn't seem to have the hip mobility to play out in space without wasteful steps and poor movement economy to mirror ball carriers.

Football IQ - He's done well to develop his rush counters and bring variety to his game. He's no longer a bull in a china shop and instead brings nuance, which he'll need since he doesn't have dynamic explosiveness in short spaces. He stays true to where he wins though and he illustrates quick instincts.

    Best Film - Nebraska (2019)

Worst Film - Iowa State (2019)

    Red Flags - None

Player Summary - A.J. Epenesa projects well as a scheme diverse talent. His value comes in traffic but his penetration ability on the interior is matched by his ability to drive and collapse the POA. Epenesa is an ace run defender with reactive quickness and terrific length and hand power. His variety as a power rusher offers upside that most players of his stature don't typically have and as a result he should be coveted in the 2020 NFL Draft by teams regardless of scheme. Base 4-3 DE or 5T at the next level.
