His production has gone down the last two seasons though, and in the sense that when he's not scoring what else does he bring to the table? He's not a great defender, rebounder, passer etc. He's just a good scorer who had his best years when his team was awful. His game does not apply pressure on a defense, doesn't get to the rim and just takes long jumpers for the most part.
His scoring has only gone down because he has taken less shots - an adjustment by design to balance out the offense. How can you say his game doesn't apply pressure to the defense when he's an elite perimeter threat and has been a 'top 10 scorer' over the last four seasons? The same level of reasoning can be applied to Tyreke who takes NOTHING but shots at the rim and is basically ineffectively everywhere else:
Evans -
3-9ft = 34%
10-15ft = 25%
16-3pt = 31%
3pt = 20%
Granger -
3-9ft = 40%
10-15ft = 37%
16-3pt = 37%
3pt = 37%
How can you say he doesn't apply pressure to the defense when Tyreke's %s are more likely to cause a defensive trickle-down effect?
I don't see it fam, they have the same chance of winning a title with Granger as they do with Evans, none. But, they have room for growth considering Evans age and his game can still be molded. Paul is still a year or two away from that next step, his shot selection and decision making are still questionable. And when Granger comes back, what are the odds he's going to take a backseat to George? If it weren't for him getting hurt Paul never would have developed as much as he has this season.
If you wanna go the direction of building for the future, then expiring-cap and picks would be a better avenue to go down. Not gambling on a player who's inabilites have got him doing the hokey pokey in the backcourt; in hopes of rectifying his game, which may never eventuate to the level they need (he hasn't shown any progression in 3 seasons), in order for them to compete. I don't see George taking a backseat, certainly not initially anyway. I see a even futher breakdown of a balanced offense with Hill being the only player to have a significant drop in FGA - with more focus on distribution and less focus on finding his own shot.
I'll take the attacking style of Evans with George and Hill, over a dude that just takes jumpers. The Pacers do not have anyone on their roster that can get to the rim, and that includes George (currently).
I'll take the player who's a proven experienced scorer and who can be a threat from all areas on the floor (not just at the rim).
