love Dragon ball Z? I watch super every week both the dub and the sub. I don't quite remember what year it was that I first started watching Dragon Ball Z but I remember what was happening on the show when I first started watching. It was Goku returning to earth and he was about to fight Vegeta for the first time. I just remember seeing some guy in a karate gi who had a technique that looked pretty much like a hadouken. I had the notion that anime as a whole was this weird geeky thing. My mom had a friend that had a daughter that liked Sailor Moon and I hated when she came over and watched it because it was all girly and shyt. I feel like DBZ somehow turned into a universal pop culture thing. People who don't really watch anime still generally know it.
For the longest time there were no Dragon ball video games...and by no video games I mean none in the us and by none in the US I mean both the first and the last (at that time) game had been released and neither was techincally a DBZ game. One was Dragonball for NES (the game was retitled dragon power and the localization process made it very different from the original game) and the other was Dragonball Final bout which was released here as Dragon ball GT final bout which is stupid in that at the time of release there was no American GT at all.
After years we finally got a Dragon ball Z game in the United States. Legacy of Goku. I understand the problems that people have with the game. For one the only 3 attacks in the whole game are a ki blast, a kamehameha wave, a solar flare, and a ki blast which is stupid because he had all of those before Z even began. Also in the anime during the Saiyan saga he learned the spirit bomb and the kaioken (and these were also important for the fight against Freeza). Ginyu doesn't change bodies with Goku at all. You also only play as Goku. The animation style (like the way Goku's body actually looks) took a little while for me to get used to. I also hear a lot of people complain about how short the game was. There were a lot of stupid sidequests and I spent so much time leveling up by killing snakes and stuff...and dying by getting killed by snakes and stuff. In this game there was also no button to transform into super sayain..he just is SS for the fight with Frieza (that's how I think i'm supposed to spell it). The Kamehameha is the only voice clip in the whole game. There is like one or two audioless video clips from the anime. I still liked the idea of walking around and experiencing the world.
I remember a game pro article talking about all the Dragonball games that were planned and they said that there were to be 3 legacy of Goku games and that there would be like a Gamecube fully 3d action rpg game that would span the LOG series. There was a second gba LOG game that was vastly improved over the first in every way and a game called Buu's fury that was pretty much LOG 3 but without the legacy of Goku in the title. TO THIS DAY we have no equivalent to what Infogrames/Atari/webfoot or whoever else was talking about. When I look at something like some of the legend of zelda games I see how good and action rpg could really be. The fighting games are kind of generic and brainless. I know that Japan got some mmorpg but in addition to us not getting it it's just not the same.
I deliberately refused to mention the generic Dragon ball z action game with no rpg elements what so ever
