Anyone realize how bullshyt this concept is? In all sports?

For example, the "textbook jumpshot" involves your shoulders and feet being perfectly square with the basket, that is both your feet should be facing the basket straight on. The ball should be held high, no "dipping motion", and then shot high above the head. You are supposed to jump straight up and down as you do this. Now I dare you to find a single player in the NBA that shoots like that. Virtually every player sets their feet at an angle and many have exaggerated turns during their actual jumpshot motion. And most players do a "dip" motion before they shoot the ball instead of catching it high. Klay is the only guy who really comes to mind right now that catches it high and rarely dips.

Off the top of my head great shooters whose form is a far cry from textbook:
Curry
Larry Bird
Kenny Smith
Damian Lillard
Kobe Bryant

Some of the best quarterbacks the NFL's ever seen throw like absolute retards, the likes of Romo, Rivers, Rodgers and Manning.

The more and more I watch pros the more and more I realize that being "textbook" and having "sound fundamentals" really only means so much. If you've got talent, you got talent, period. :yeshrug:

Yeah I think that stuff is more for teaching kids how to play the game. Pros can fine tune and play the way that suits them best, and most of them do. But if you're teaching your boy how to play sports, you're at least going to try to teach him the right techniques because if you can master those, your chances at succeeding are probably much higher

I mean damn, Ken Griffey Jr had the most perfect swing I've ever seen and he just got the damn red carpet rolled out for him to the HOF with the highest % of votes in history. So it goes both ways. But I see your point

Nobody has ever said Kobe had textbook form. Is his shot fun to look at? Sure. Kobe's just great at getting buckets.

also, practicing "textbook form" doesn't mean you stick to it rigidly within the game. being square is to mimic how you should shoot within the game, a strong core is what keeps that shot looking/feeling the same from the waist up.

textbook form is more a less a checklist, than it is a picture / picture comparison

Ray Allen And Klay Thompson are the best examples of textbook form.

But really "textbook form" is just a baseline for mechanics. At the end of the day as long as you shoot the same time fluidly, consistently, and accurately then you're pretty much there as a shooter.

Fucc Curry but from what I've heard his form is perfect.
The only thing he does "wrong" is not line up his feet but his upper body is still square so its kind of a wash:yeshrug:

It always looks like Curry's pushing his shot to me, it may have the fastest release but I think it's one awkward shot to look at
