Collin County
Jordan Jacobs
PLANO, Texas (TCD) -- A 25-year-old man was recently sentenced to life in prison after fatally shooting a stranger in 2021 because he allegedly looked at his girlfriend.
According to a news release from the Collin County District Attorney’s Office, on July 7, 2021, Steven Gambles II was headed to the Shops of Legacy to meet a friend for dinner when a "complete stranger," Jordan Jacobs, passed him outside of the Mini Mart. Jacobs reportedly told his girlfriend he was going to rob Gambles because he was looking at her.
Jacobs went back to his home, changed into a long-sleeve security jacket, dark pants, and a mask as a disguise and circled around the Shops of Legacy waiting for Gambles for two hours to return from dinner, the D.A.’s Office said.

Surveillance video revealed Jacobs entering Gambles’ vehicle and stealing a firearm in the console. According to the D.A.’s Office, Gambles came back to his car and Jacobs pointed the stolen gun toward Gambles’ head and fired. Gambles was shot in the temple.

On Oct. 5, the D.A.’s Office announced a jury found Jacobs guilty of capital murder. He was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement, "An innocent man was out enjoying dinner with a friend when his life was taken by a violent stranger." He called the incident a "senseless and terrible crime."

Plano Police Department's Detective Aaron Benzick was able to track the fleeing man, who was dressed as a security guard, through surveillance footage back to his nearby apartment and identified Jacobs as the shooter.

Officials said Jacobs was not associated with the Shops at Legacy security nor was he employed as a security guard with any company.

The Verdict
A jury found Jacobs guilty of capital murder. Judge George Flint presided over the case and assessed the automatic punishment of life without the possibility of parole.

Phyllis Gant and Steven Gambles Sr. lost their son, Steven Gambles Jr., 32, in July 2021 after he was shot and killed during a robbery in Plano.

Gant is a community advocate in Lubbock. Gambles Sr. is an educator and local minister.

Gant said her son had a whole life to live before his “senseless” death

“Steven was 32 years old. Never married. Never fathered any children. Had a beautiful young lady. They probably would have gotten married,” said Gant. “It was the most senseless, it was the most unfair, and it was the most ridiculous killing.”

“It was senseless,” agreed Gambles Sr. “He just happened to see my son and decided to rob him.”

Gant said she got a call from from her younger son, Marcus, and a Plano police officer telling her about the shooting.

“The officer told me there’s been a fatal shooting and we need you to come down and make an identification. Quite naturally, I lost my mind,” said Gant.

Steven Gambles Sr. said he told Jacobs he forgave him during the trial.

“I took the stand and I spoke to him directly. I called out his name and then I told him that I forgave him,” said Gambles Sr. “Then I told him however much time he has on the earth, to prepare his heart to meet the Lord.”

Gant and Gambles Sr. told EverythingLubbock.com their son was a person who “lived out loud” and loved his family.

“He took pride in himself,” said Gant.

“When he was born, he put pep in my step and rockets in my pockets. It just gives you more meaning to life. He was such a beautiful loving child,” said Gambles Sr.
