What's next for Tesla's Model S? Road safety and assistance tools may be on the docket, including self-driving technology that Elon Musk refers to as "autopilot," according to a Bloomberg report. The CEO has reportedly been in talks with Google about assistive tech -- the feature could be similar to what we've seen in Mountain View's recent self-driving demos, though a system developed in-house by Tesla is more likely. Bloomberg states that some automakers, such as Nissan, think autonomous vehicles could be a decade away, so don't expect a next-gen Model S to navigate roads on its own.

Meanwhile, a hidden configuration page in current vehicles reveals some additional features, including Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise and Lane Departure Warning. All three are currently disabled, but they could bring at least some additional automation to the all-electric car. It's unlikely that the required hardware is installed within sedans already on the road, but it's clearly on the company's radar, giving us hope that some of the concerns we outlined during our review may soon be addressed.

i always thought that self driving cars would be a possibility. in my head the way it works is that all cars can detect each other from amount of space between each other to the speed each car is currently running at. then they'll just be able to get anywhere without someone controlling it thru gps/google or w.e :manny: (i think about shyt like this when im high)

im guessin this is the way to do it right? seems to me like the most logical explanation unless someone comes in here and drops a ether of mindblown on me

Autonomous cars aren't a "possibility," they already exist and are driving on the roads. However, they are legal in only a few states, and are obviously far from being mass market.

hate to say it bro but you are totally not with the times

driverless cars already exist and they've already logged 500,000 miles on roads with other cars driven by humans

they are run on computer algorithms that drive the car by sensing everything going on around the environment of the car, from other cars, pedestrians, road blocks, GPS, google maps, etc.

and there is already a race to bring the first fully autonomous car to market.....that should happen in the next 4-5 years.......in the next 10-15 years driverless cars should be as common as normal cars driven by humans

the future is now breh
