Coates was seriously outclassed in that debate.

No he was not. Coates came out on top. He specifically pointed out to govt. policies/actions implemented to deliberately create wealth for whites while leaving Blacks out. Hence Coates' conclusion is to use the same govt. actions to redress the wrongs of the past. Steele responded to leaving it along and rugged individualism which does not make sense since it was not just a few individuals who created the wealth gap but an entire govt.

It's not the role of government to do social engineering.

If you want to close the wealth gap, the best thing for black people to do is focus on education. You also need to address the breakdown of the black family. Those are probably the two biggest impediments to the success of black people in America.
