Syria Opposition Rejects Russian Draft of New Constitution

The draft proposes that the Syrian president be elected for seven years without the right to seek re-election, Interfax reported, citing a person familiar with the document it didn’t identify. It also suggests that the country will have a parliament with two chambers and rejects Islamic sharia as the basis for law, the newswire said.

I'm sure there are a number of reasons but the underlying one is that the Syrian people want to make their own constitution without outside influence.

It's insulting that advisors did not request input when drafting. Russia should have modeled the proposed government like the UAE with combination of sharia and civil law. It was wrong omit sharia law. KSA, with it's Wahhabism, doesn't practice extreme sharia. Contrary to what people are taught, Islam has evolved and still is progressing with the time like the other religions and countries.

The proposal also requested name change from "Syrian Arab Republic" to the "Republic of Syria" which doesn't make sense; it's 75% Arab, an overwhelmingly Arab nation with 9% Kurds and one hundred thousand Turkish. This essentially severs ties from the Arab League (neighboring Levant Arab, Gulf, and N. African nations). The United States wouldn't severe it's European ties and culture because of 12% of Black population and growing Latino population if it reorganized. The original constitution for Syria wasn't unreasonable. Tricky Europeans. We see you Putin strategic.
