SURVIVAL FIRE WITH A WATER BOTTLE! - YouTube

Sometimes you find yourself without a way to start a fire, but usually there are plastic bottles of water somewhere to be had, or just go out and fill up an empty water bottle with water in order to use it as a magnifying glass.

Here's a cool video on how to focus the light from the sun through the water bottles onto paper, the young man in the vid uses black paper because it obsorbs light and heat better, while white paper reflects light and heat to some extent.

pretty cool stuff

I never thought of it, but it seems like it would be a good idea for any survival kit to include a magnifying glass. although I'll point out that it won't do you much good when trying to start a fire at night

Most survival kits are for short term survival, and they usually include matches and lighters.

At the end of the day though, you have to know how to rub the wood (n/h) and use the flint

I'm sayin though, with that in mind, i would try to use the magnifying glass when I could, and conserve any matches/lighter I have for when it's the only option

if you didn't lose or break the magnifying glass, you would never have to rub the wood (n/h)

What about at night?

you would have to keep that in mind and make sure you do your fire starting in the daylight

the point is it's a million times easier than trying to start a fire with friction, or a spark from flint
