UK police officer fired after run-in with student on YouTube
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A University of Kentucky police officer has been fired after a run-in with a student that was caught on tape and posted online.
The video was uploaded to YouTube earlier this week. It shows a confrontation between a student in his dorm room and several UK police officers.
UK police Chief Joe Monroe tells WKYT his officers were called by residence staff at Haggin Hall to help them gain entry to a room. The staff was investigating a report of alcohol being poured out of the dorm window.
In the video you can see an officer force his way into the room, shoving the student aside.
In a statement released by Chief Monroe late Wednesday afternoon he said, "after a thorough internal investigation, the officer in question has been terminated from his employment at the University of Kentucky, effective immediately. The officer in question had inappropriate physical contact with a student. The officer, as a result, was in violation of a number of university employment polices."
Chief Monroe says the officer fired was David Thompson. He had been on the force since March 2006.
The student who shot the footage of officers entering his room was Graham Gaddis. When Gaddis heard of the firing of Thompson, he responded with the following statement -
"I'm excited about it and I feel he got what he deserves. I egged him on and he took the bait and now he's where he should be."
